11.2 million diabetics in Nigeria, according to the Association

The Diabetes Association of Nigeria disclosed that 11.2 million Nigerians currently live with diabetes. Dr. Alkali Mohammed, the association's President, shared this during the 2023 World Diabetes Day event in Abuja. The day aims to spotlight the global diabetes challenge and encourage collective action for its management and prevention.

The event theme, "Access to diabetes care," emphasizes the need for awareness and management strategies. Mohammed highlighted that 90% of those affected have type 2 diabetes, impacting various body parts. Globally, an estimated 537 million individuals live with diabetes, projected to rise to 737 million by 2040 without intervention.

To address this, Mohammed proposed increasing taxes on Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSBs) from 10% to 20%. This step, he argued, could discourage sugary product consumption, promoting a healthier environment and generating government revenue. He noted the lack of clarity regarding the utilization of the current 10% tax from SSBs and the government's limited funding for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) management, citing financial constraints as a hurdle.
