President Tinubu Grants ASUU Waiver After Eight-Month Strike

President Bola Tinubu has made a significant decision regarding the eight-month strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which began on February 14, 2022, and ended on October 17, 2022. He approved a partial waiver of the "No Work, No Pay" policy, which had been instituted against the striking lecturers for the duration of the strike.

This decision was communicated through a statement by the President's Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale. President Tinubu directed the waiver to be granted under the condition that the Federal Ministry of Education and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment must establish a Document of Understanding. This document will confirm that the waiver granted to ASUU is an exceptional one and will be the last of its kind, not only for ASUU but for all other education sector unions.

The President invoked the Principle of the Presidential Prerogative of Mercy, aiming to alleviate the challenges faced during the implementation of key economic reforms in the country. This decision reflects the President's recognition of the commitment to the terms agreed upon during the negotiations between ASUU and the Federal Government of Nigeria.
