TRIBUNAL: "I Always Knew He Wouldn't Win" – Wike Highlights the Political Realities Ignored by Obi's Supporters

Nyesom Wike, the former Governor of Rivers and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has asserted that supporters of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate from the Labour Party, lack a deep understanding of politics.

During an interview on Channels TV held the day after the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal upheld Bola Tinubu's victory in the February 2023 presidential election, Wike, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made this statement.

Wike openly declared his support for Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, and actively campaigned for him in Rivers State. His support has been rewarded with an appointment as the FCT minister.

Regarding Peter Obi's presidential bid, Wike expressed his views candidly, saying, "I knew that he wouldn't win the election. Let me be honest; I'm a realist. When I look at the way the election unfolded, it was a challenging election, and I commend INEC for it."

He continued, "Yes, as a young man, many people might have preferred him to win, but if you observe how the votes were distributed, it tells a different story. There's a generational shift; the younger generation was fatigued. For them, their only hope was to vote for Obi as a younger candidate compared to others."

However, Wike emphasized that these younger voters may not have fully considered the complexities of Nigerian politics. He pointed out that factors like ethnicity and religion play significant roles in Nigerian politics, alongside competence.

In summary, Wike asserted that while Obi may have appealed to the younger generation, the reality of Nigerian politics extends beyond youth and competence, encompassing considerations of ethnicity and religion.
