Oluwo tackles Obasanjo for ordering Oyo monarchs to stand

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, strongly criticized former President Olusegun Obasanjo's directive to traditional rulers in Oyo State to stand and greet Governor Seyi Makinde during a project inauguration in Iseyin, Oyo State. Oba Akanbi considered this act as a significant disrespect to the Yoruba traditional institutions.

A short video of Obasanjo, speaking in Yoruba, circulated online, where he expressed displeasure with the monarchs for not rising to greet Governor Makinde. He believed that their action disrespected the governor's office.

In response, Oba Akanbi, through a statement signed by his Press Secretary, Alli Ibrahim, condemned the former president's actions and demanded an apology letter from him. He emphasized that Yoruba monarchs should not be treated as individuals who can be ordered around. He also placed blame on the royal fathers who followed Obasanjo's directive.

The statement conveyed Oba Akanbi's strong belief in the sanctity of his role and traditional institution. He stated that respect should be earned, not demanded, and that traditional rulers should also be respected by their subjects. Kingship, in his view, is a divine institution that necessitates a high level of modesty, courtesy, and respect when interacting with kings.

Oba Akanbi deemed General Obasanjo's actions as disrespectful and sacrilegious towards the revered Yoruba traditional stools. He asserted that an injury to one Yoruba monarch is an injury to all, and those royal fathers who obeyed the embarrassing directive should share the blame.

In conclusion, Oba Akanbi criticized the former general's conduct, stating that Yoruba traditional institutions deserve an apology for the open desecration and disrespect they faced. He challenged Obasanjo to demonstrate his commitment to Yoruba culture and tradition by issuing an apology letter, emphasizing that kings are not to be treated like children and that they are fathers in their communities. He also highlighted the contrast in how such actions would be perceived if directed at Northern Emirs.
