The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has apprehended a 36-year-old woman named Bunmi Samuel, involved in a scheme where stolen SIM cards from pilfered phones were used to drain victims' bank accounts.
It was discovered that Samuel, a mother of two, collaborated with her boyfriend, an adept phone snatcher, in their unlawful activities.
Detailing their modus operandi, FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Haruna Garba, revealed that the duo would steal phones from unsuspecting individuals and subsequently hack SIM cards extracted from these stolen phones to siphon money from bank accounts linked to the compromised SIM cards.
During the parade of the suspects, which included the boyfriend, at the command headquarters on Thursday, CP Garba disclosed, "After snatching phones, he removes the SIM cards and sells the phone then hands over the SIM cards to his girlfriend, Bunmi Samuel."
"The girlfriend, on her part, makes withdrawals of all monies from the accounts that are linked to the SIM cards."
The police operation has so far yielded 76 recovered SIM cards, two Opay ATM cards, and a valuable golden wristwatch from the culprits.
In addition to this case, Garba also presented 12 other suspects apprehended from various locations within the territory. They were found in possession of assorted weapons, vehicles, laptops, phones, musical instruments, among other items, and are accused of crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and burglary within the territory.
Furthermore, the CP revealed the arrest of one Musa Matins, suspected of being involved in armed robbery in the Durumi Area. Matins confessed to having participated in car snatching and thefts within and around the FCT. The police have already recovered two stolen Toyota Camry vehicles with registration numbers MAG-149 AR (Borno) and RBC-445 AS (Abuja), and efforts are underway to identify the rightful owners of these vehicles.
